Do all the good you can,
By all the means you can,
In all the ways you can,
In all the places you can
At all the times you can,
To all the people you can,
As long as ever you can
John Wesley
The mission activities of Salem United
Methodist Church represent our faith in action; our beliefs at work. As a
church we strive to live up to the words of John Wesley in our church
community, our local Wexford community, the greater North Hills area,
nationally, and globally.
We see God’s grace and human activity
working together in the relationship of faith and good works. All are
welcome to join us as we share the love of God with others.
Salem's mission
activities represent our faith in action, our beliefs at work. As a church
we strive to do all the good we can, in all the places we can.
Among the numerous mission
activities Salem sponsors and participates in are:
Miryam's Place – Miryam’s is a shelter for women with emotional and
mental problems. Salem volunteers organize visits to Miryam’s including an
elegant tea party luncheon for the residents complete with spa activities
such as facial treatments and manicures.
Olive Branch - Salem is home to the Olive Branch
Gift Shop which sells high quality hand crafted items from developing
countries. Now in its 29th year, the Olive Branch stresses: People
First...Not Profits.
Valentine Care Packages - Church members collect
snacks and other treats to send to Salem college students to remind them
they are being thought of while at school.
Operation Safety Net - Operation Safety Net is a
health care outreach program for the street homeless population in the
Pittsburgh area. Working with Dr. Jim Withers, the medical director, Salem
held a brunch to raise funds and collect socks and toiletry items for the
homeless.
Health Kits - On three occasions in the past
year, the Salem congregation has assembled health kits for UMCOR (United
Methodist Committee on Relief). The kits are distributed throughout the
world during times of disaster.
African Project – Our church community and the
Salem Preschool are working to establish a relationship with the Govhingo
Preschool in Africa. Recently, funds were sent to Africa for the purchase
of a swing set for the 70 to 80 children who attend Govhingo. Also, five
hundred dollars was donated by the Olive Branch to the United Methodist
Hospital in Zimbabwe sponsored by the Pittsburgh District.
Thanksgiving Dinner Project - Salem is teaming
with Bradford Woods Community Church in sponsoring a Thanksgiving meal. We
are planning to serve around 50 people in the fellowship hall with another
75 to 100 meals to be delivered to homes throughout our community. Many of
the recipients of the meal are elderly or have physical handicaps and will
spend the holiday alone.
Christmas Mission - During the Season of Advent,
Salem will support a local charity or organization which helps needy
families and children during the Christmas season.
All are
welcome to participate in Salem’s mission projects!
